Northern Studies Research Presented in Murmansk - November 14-18
Two recent films by Centre for Northern Studies (CNS) member Ronald N. Harpelle have been selected for screening at the Northern Character Film Festival in Murmansk, Russia, November 14-18. The Northern Character Festival, a meeting of television and film professionals from across Northern Europe and the circumpolar world, will screen over 100 films at this year's festival. Arctic Research Project Receives CFI Funding
Dr. Chris Southcott, professor of sociology at Lakehead University, has been awarded a Leaders Opportunity Fund grant valued at $87,246 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). This funding will offset research infrastructure costs to establish a new research network focused on investigating sustainable communities, cultures, and environments in the Circumpolar North. Two researchers associated with Lakehead’s Centre for Northern Studies will attend the 7th International Congress of the Arctic Social Sciences(ICASS) Conference in Akureyri, Iceland, June 22 - 26, 2011, with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). Graduate Students Receive $15,000 in Federal Funds for Northern Field Research
Six graduate students at Lakehead have been awarded $15,000 for field research support in Northern Canada. The funds are granted through the Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP), a Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development program administered at Lakehead by the Centre for Northern Studies (CNS). NSTP aims to promote interest in northern studies, and provide opportunities for advanced and graduate students to obtain experience and professional training in the North. Minister Goodyear announced today that Dr. Chris Southcott, together with a team of Lakehead researchers all from the Centre for Northern Studies, has been granted $2.5 million to investigate the social, environmental, and economic challenges facing Arctic communities in Canada and the rest of the circumpolar world.
